SECHS KLEINE STÜCKE are the result of the first collaboration between Bernhard and Gary that was conducted through the mail and pre-dates the formation of their duo Klangstaub ( the connection between them had been established some time earlier when Bernhard had contributed a track to Gary's 'SuperTexture' album ) .

Bernhard sent Gary solo recordings of the Indian esraj ( a bowed string instrument he mainly used for percussion ), the Japanese shakuhachi and other bamboo flutes. From these recordings Gary selected several short pieces or extracted short sections, sometimes repeating them ( up to four times in one case ), and added a single guitar track to each. Three of these six guitar tracks are first takes and the use of 'dropping-in' was completely avoided in order to retain spontaneity and authenticity.

Having received Gary's work, Bernhard added one or two clarinet tracks to each piece ( also first takes without any drop-ins), thickening the texture of the music, and performed a few minor edits on these tracks - the presence of two clarinets had not originally been planned, so a that few modifications became necessary in order to enable each musical part and phrase to breathe.

With this last step, a particular musical style began to emerge - although these short chamber pieces use a different instrumentation and recording approach, they clearly anticipate later recording sessions when Bernhard and Gary met and started creating music together in real time, so far culminating in their 'Diary' recordings. The artists feel that the six short pieces have their own particular atmosphere and charm, and so decided to publish them.
